New Permanent Discounted Fare Program Announced!
Congratulations, you did it! This week, County Executive Sara Innamorato, Pittsburgh Regional Transit, and Allegheny County Department of Human Services, announced the launch of Allegheny Go, a 50% off fare program for households with individuals receiving SNAP benefits! The program is now available for over 130,000 SNAP users in Allegheny County. It is thanks to all of you who helped advocate for a reduced transit fare program over the past few years that we have gained this milestone victory! While the initial program is digital-only, a card-based program will launch in early 2025.
We were proud to witness Teaira Collins - a PFPC and PRT Board Member who personally enrolled hundreds of people in the pilot program - speak at the event, along with another insiping transit rider and advocate Sherai Richardson. Their powerful stories show us what a positive ripple effect the reduced fare pilot program had on their lives and how impactful Allegheny GO will be for thousands of families within the county.
Thank you to our members for all of your support, and to our partners and transit riders who have worked hard to push for this victory! We are especially thankful to Pittsburghers for Public Transit, Just Harvest, and Equitable and Just Greater Pittsburgh who worked closely with DHS to implement a successful Reduced Fare Pilot Program over the past year that helped produce this program.
Advocating for more affordable transportation is one of nine priority strategies of the Pittsburgh Food Policy Council identified by the Greater Pittsburgh Food Action Plan. This is a major milestone towards achieving that goal and celebrations are in order! However, half-fare means that we’re only half-way there and we must continue to push for a zero fare program for low-income riders. We know that this will have an even greater impact!
